Up Next, JoeyG of the Humanauts, with his smooth yet dynamic rhymes, Joey has been at this music game from an early age.
"My cousin DannyD. was writing raps and recording in his closet with an old shitty mic. And he put me on, made me wanna start writing my own raps. Then I moved to Brooklyn when I was 13, and started recording on my own. I used to battle people online on this website called 'Lyricwars'. Shit was lit. I didn't really get heavy into song making until my sister passed away tho, when I was 15, that was when it all changed."
Who are some that influenced you along the way?
"Along the way, my influences were; Nas, Rakim, Biggie, Mos Def, Eminem, those were the main dudes in the beginning. Then it was Pharrell, N.E.R.D., the whole Star Trak movement was crazy to me, that was when I was like 15. Then when I got older it was dudes like Cudi, Drake, Wiz, A$AP, Schoolboy Q, Travis Scott. Also other dope Shit like Minus The Bear, Empire of the Sun. A lot of hardcore bands like Vanna, Enter Shikari, Underoath. All that shit"
You said some of your accomplishments were getting interviewed by MySpace, gettin Zooted on Music Choice, and opening up for Lil Wayne. What was that like, opening for Lil Wayne!?
"It was a crazy experience. Biggest crowd I ever performed in front of. The energy was intense. I didn't get to meet Wayne. But it was still a dope experience."
You're apart of the Humanauts, how did they come about?
"My dawg B8TA created The Humanauts, I was the first dude he brought in, then we were kinda like a hip hop duo. The original Humanauts. Then it kinda faded away, cuz we both were goin through personal stuff, and the distance made it hard to work. I started goin from click to click, tryna find my place, and I wanted to have somethin of my own. So I asked B8TA if it was cool I resurrect the name, and turn it into a movement, and he gave me the go. Danny French was the first person I brought in. Fredo and CA$HMERE a little while after. And we been tryna glow up ever since."
Have you noticed a change in your persona since you began?
"Definitely notice a slight persona change, as far as my drug use and my actions. I'm still me though. That's the thing, it's JoeyG., there's no gimmick or bullshit behind it. But I can say my personality has changed, especially after everything I've experienced, all the fuckery that's occurred along the way."
What is it that gets you going in the industry?
"And fuckkk the industry man. I've seen the ugly side. Shit ain't pretty. Ain't no love in this shit at all. I just love makin music and doin' what I do, I'm tryna find my own way though. All the people that believe in me, keep me going. I do this for me, but I also do it for them too, without them I wouldn't be here."
